In recent years, there has been a rise in the production of beauty and spa scrub products containing either salt or sugar. Have you ever wondered why? Today we will reveal the Top 5 Reasons why you should use either a Salt Scrub or a Sugar Scrub as part of your Home Spa experience.
1. It is a Natural Substitute for Microbeads
Microbeads are tiny spherical beads made out of polyethylene or polypropylene and is used as an abrasive exfoliating agent in many well known brands of face and body washes as well as some toothpaste. Because it is made out of plastic, the microbeads do not dissolve when used and simply washes away down the drain.
A recent study estimates that around 19 tonnes of microbeads find their way into the wastewater streams of New York. The study sates that:
"Because of their small size and buoyancy, many microbeads escape capture by wastewater treatment plants, which typically filter water through a coarse (greater than 6 mm), or a fine (1.5–6 mm) screen. Subsequently, microbeads in the treated water are discharged to rivers, lakes, or oceans, where they accumulate and persist".
Needless to say that the accumulation of microbeads in rivers, lakes or oceans has a detrimental environmental impact on the ecosystem with various fish and small animals mistakenly ingesting the plastic beads. Another study published by researchers from Plymouth University and the UK Marine Biological Association in the Marine Pollution Bulletin found that 36.5% of the fish tested from the coastal waters of Plymouth had ingested plastic.
The benefit of using a salt scrub or a sugar scrub as part of your beauty routine in this context is clear: sugar and salt dissolves in water, and do not pollute the enviroment and endanger marine animals.
It might seem, obvious but it is still the number one reason for using either a salt scrub or a sugar scrub. The coarse microparticles are very effective in removing dead skin and leaving fresh skin behind, nourishing it with various minerals and nutrients. The exfoliating effect of salt scrubs and sugar scrubs help increase peripheral blood circulation, toning up the skin and aiding the renewal of skin cells.
3. Kalahari Salt Is full of Nutrients and Minerals
Our Kalahari Salt Scrubs and Bath Soaks contain Kalahari Desert Salt. Our salt comes from an area in the Kalahari which was never inhabited or used for industrial purposes. Here a crystal clear underwater stream runs through a rock formation that originates from the Dwyka strata era and is around 280 million years old. This rock formation stores salt crystals that are washed out by this water and the salt brine runs into an underground salt lake. From there it gets forwarded to the surface where it is sun dried and packaged. Our salt remains pure, natural and totally untreated. It still contains all the minerals that are so essential for our bodies’ health and our well-being. Kalahari salt contains very important minerals and trace elements and ishigh in potassium, sulfur and magnesium. It contains no Iodine because it is found inland. Sunfood.com published a full list of minerals contained in Kalahari Desert Salt. See table below.
4. Magnesium Rich Salt Improves Skin barrier Function, Enhances Skin Hydration, and Reduces Inflammation in Atopic Dry Skin
A study published in 2005 investigated the health benefits of bathing in Dead Sea water. The water in the Dead Sea contains large quantities of salt that is magnesium rich and the study found that:
"... bathing in the salt solution was well tolerated, improved skin barrier function, enhanced stratum corneum hydration, and reduced skin roughness and inflammation. We suggest that the favorable effects of bathing in the Dead Sea salt solution are most likely related to the high magnesium content. Magnesium salts are known to bind water, influence epidermal proliferation and differentiation, and enhance permeability barrier repair."
Our Kalahari Salt contains not only high levels of magnesium, but also other vital minerals and trace elements.
5. Sugar Scrubs are Good for Your Skin
Emilie Davidson Hoyt wrote a very interesting article in the Huffington Post called: "3 Ways Sugar Is Good for Your Skin". In this article she writes about the health benefits of using sugar scrubs and lists the following reasons why it is good for you:
- Sugar is a natural Humectant- it draws moisture out of the environment into the skin. This in effect helps keep the skin moist and hydrated.
- Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid(AHA) that penetrates the skin and breaks down the "glue" that bonds the skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and generating fresher, younger-looking skin.
- As mentioned before, sugar scrubs are excellent topical exfoliants due to its small, coarse particles.
Sugar Scrubs and Salt Scrubs are not only good for the enviroment but also offers real health benefits for your skin.
